5th Place: Derek Remitz
Derek Remitz burst onto the scenes with a win at Lake Amistad in 2007. He parlayed that win and a second place finish into a Rookie of the Year title and a trip to his second Bassmaster Classic in 2008. However, the noted football head jig specialist has not been able to repeat his rookie season success. That is until this year.

Saturday found the young pro in his third top 12 showdown of the year and looking to move into serious contention in the AOY race. Consecutive limits over the 21-pound mark gave Remitz a 5th place finish, the best this season. It also kept him at third in AOY points now less than 150 points behind leader Skeet Reese.

“It was a timing deal all week,” Remitz said. “I knew if I could hit the right place a t the right time I could catch a couple of good ones.” That is what he did on Saturday. With just three small fish in the well at noon, Derek made the right move at the right time and put 21-pounds, 14 ounces in the boat.

Although he has found success with the jig, this week his fish came on a crankbait. “I was cranking all week,” he said. “I did catch a couple on a jig the first day, but that was just to get a limit in the boat.”

Finding the sweet spot was a matter of using his side imaging and making a ton of cast. “I found a couple of spots that weren’t on the map,” said the Alabama pro. “You had to get on a ledge and work down it until you found the fish. Sometimes I would go a mile before getting into a school of fish. When you did catch one you had to make that exact cast again to keep them biting.”

His only regret for the week was the lack of fish he was able to find. “I needed more areas with fish on them,” he said. “When you are cranking, you will lose fish. The trick is to find enough so that losing a few doesn’t matter. I didn’t do that this week.” Article and Photo:BASS ZONE
